About This Song
Pixinguinha’s “Carinhoso” is one of the most important works of Brazilian popular music. It was composed in 1916 and it reached incredible success and musical stature in the 70s. Alfredo da Rocha Vianna Filho, known as Pixinguinha (1897-1973) was a flutist, saxophonist, composer, and arranger. His legacy in Brazil is unsurpassed and is considered one of the greatest composers of Brazilian popular music. There have been many renditions of this classic standard including performances by Elis Regina, Paulinho da Viola, Caetano Veloso, Orlando Silva, Androniran Barbosa, Marisa Monte, Yamandu Costa, Baden Powell, Joao Gilberto, Roland Dyens, and more. Stevan Pasero’s solo guitar arrangement is in the key of G Major and stays true to the melody and traditional harmonies. Of course, Stevan has included subtle harmonic shifts and timbre colorata in this version. Midway through the piece (bars 49-52) and ending (bars 53-62), Stevan also composed segue variations for this timeless romantic classic.
